 A Light of Little Radiance

By

Keith Anthony Baird & Beverley Lee

Selina Dragavei wanders the northern wastes in fear of persecution from the Holy Roman Church. In Europe's Dark Age, witchfinders scour the lands and traveller folk such as she are put to flame and suffering. On the ruthless steppes, she evades them but something far sinister will lay claim to her soul.

Returning to the world of men, a dark, transformed Selina has a thirst for blood and only the drift down through the centuries will quench it. But she won't make that journey alone, as she determines to bring others to her. As a troupe of entertainers, they attend pageants, festivals, and even royal galas, where a family bound to darkness feed on unsuspecting mortals. Such debauchery, however, does not go unnoticed. Famed witchfinder, Desider von Brandenburg, becomes obsessed with bringing this band of vampire-devils to a righteous cleansing, and so a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

Will the holy man bring God's wrath down upon them, or will Selina and her nightwalkers battle the might of Heaven and emerge unscathed? Only instinct, cunning, and a little luck under the watch of a wolf moon will tell...

Review

Beginning in the 16th Century, A light of Little Radiance tells the story of Selina Dragavei, a Romany gypsy, who whilst being pursued one day stumbles on the site of a ruined pagan cult. Exploring the reasons for the cults demise, she stumbles on an ancient god who imbues her with vampiric powers.

As the story follows her through the ages, she gathers a band of touring travellers who she converts to the ways of the vampire.

Moving from from town to town, village to village, the troupe sate their thirst for blood on the unwary and the naïve.

Reading like a cross between Near Dark & The Vampire Chronicles, A Light of Little Radiance is an interesting tale that moves from century to century. For those that are averse to gore, be wary that A Light of Little Radiance does not shy away from the old blood flow as the vampires kill their way across Central and Eastern Europe, taking who they feel like and whatever age.

The writers do a good job of evoking the time period and dragging the reader into the story.

In addition to this, the reason for Selena becoming a vampire is interesting too as there is a slight feeling of cosmic horror.

All in all, this is an enjoyable vampire tale that has good characters and buckets of blood.
